Intended learning outcomes
Upon approval, the student should be able to:
- Understand the need for the development of greener chemistries and chemical processes through an integrated approach, as part of the tools used to drive sustainability through innovation.
- Identify and understand the most common environmental, health and safety issues when considering what is more sustainable in the realm of green chemistry and green engineering (GC&GE).
- Analyse and evaluate alternative materials (solvents, reagents, catalysts) and reaction conditions based on GC&GE principles and metrics.
- Calculate mass and energy balances and apply them as a tool for “greenness” improvement (unit operations of reaction and separations).
- Use concepts of mass and energy integration and inherently safety to design more sustainable chemical processes.
- Apply elemental life-cycle methodology to assess processes.
